Avalanche

In September 1943, during World War II, the coast of Salerno was the site of a major event in the history of the Mediterranean. A fleet of about 1,000 vessels, carrying 170,000 soldiers (100,000 British, 70,000 American) was one of the largest landings in history, Operation Avalanche. This landing represented the entry of the allied troops into continental Europe.
